SIJ Pain and Running: Can You Keep Running?
Should shoulder exercises be painful?
Some mild discomfort during rehabilitation is often acceptable, but exercises shouldn't cause severe or progressively worsening pain.
How often should I do my shoulder exercises?
This depends on your injury and stage of recovery. Your physiotherapist will prescribe a program suited to your individual needs.
Can resistance bands replace weights?
Resistance bands are excellent for early rehabilitation, but many people eventually benefit from progressing to free weights or gym equipment.
Should I copy exercises from YouTube?
Not always. Exercises that are appropriate for one shoulder condition may aggravate another. It's important to know what you're treating before beginning rehabilitation.
Why Choose The Addison?
At The Addison Physiotherapy, we believe rehabilitation should be individual - not generic. We assess your shoulder, identify the underlying cause of your symptoms and prescribe exercises based on your goals, lifestyle and stage of recovery.
Whether you're aiming to return to the gym, sport or simply everyday life without pain, we'll help you build a stronger, more resilient shoulder.
Pain around the back of the pelvis is often described as “SIJ pain”.
The sacroiliac joint sits where the pelvis meets the sacrum. However, pain in this area does not automatically mean the SIJ itself is the source.
What else can cause pain there?
Symptoms around the posterior pelvis can potentially relate to:
- lumbar spine
- SIJ
- gluteal structures
- proximal hamstring
- referred or neural pain
That is why location alone isn't enough for a diagnosis.
Can running aggravate it?
Yes. Running repeatedly transfers force through the trunk, pelvis and lower limbs.
Symptoms can sometimes emerge following changes in running volume, speed, hills or overall training load.
Do you need to stop?
Not always.
If running produces mild symptoms that remain stable and settle appropriately afterwards, training may sometimes continue in a modified form.
If symptoms progressively worsen, alter your running mechanics or start producing neurological symptoms, further assessment is appropriate.
Rehab is rarely just about “putting the pelvis back in”
Modern rehabilitation generally focuses more on function, strength, load tolerance and symptom behaviour than repeatedly trying to correct tiny positional differences in the pelvis.
Depending on the presentation, rehabilitation may involve trunk, hip and lower-limb strengthening alongside graded running exposure.
